El Chaltén sits 220 km north of El Calafate at the foot of the Fitz Roy range. On a day trip the bus covers that distance twice, which leaves you around five hours in and around the village. That is time for the short walks to the condor lookout and the Chorrillo del Salto waterfall, or for the guided hike up to Laguna Capri. It is not time for the famous trails to the foot of Fitz Roy or Cerro Torre.

Three ways to spend the day in El Chaltén

The walks column is the one that matters: two tours stop at the same short walks, one is a proper hike. The park entrance is not included on any of them.

About this tour

El Chaltén lies 220 km north of El Calafate, so a good part of this day is the drive. In the village you get around five hours for two short walks: up to the Mirador de los Cóndores (about 700 m according to the listing) and to the Chorrillo del Salto waterfall.

This is a sightseeing day with short hikes. The long trails to Laguna de los Tres or Laguna Torre are not part of it. Lunch is optional.

Know before you go

  • Pickup only from accommodation with a reception desk; otherwise you go to a meeting point
  • Not a Fitz Roy trek: the long day hikes do not fit into this schedule

About this tour

The longest hike you can fit into a day trip from El Calafate: a guided walk to the Mirador Laguna Capri, about 8 km with roughly 400 m of climbing, around two hours up and two hours back, with a picnic.

The bus ride takes about two hours there and two and a half back, according to the listing. Minimum age is 12. In winter snow can stop the hike: a review from August 2026 reports exactly that.

Know before you go

  • About 8 km and 400 m of ascent; you need to be fit for it
  • From 12 years
  • Snow can cancel the hike in winter (review, August 2026)

Short walks, one longer hike

Two of the tours on this page combine the Mirador de los Cóndores with the Chorrillo del Salto. The condor lookout is a short climb above the village (the Patagonia Dreams listing gives about 700 m) with a view down over El Chaltén and, on a clear day, across to Fitz Roy. The waterfall is the second, shorter stop. One traveller in October 2026 found the walk to the lookout well paced and fairly easy in good weather, adding that rain would make it harder.

The Info de Ushuaia day is different. Its guided hike to the Mirador Laguna Capri covers about 8 km with roughly 400 m of climbing, around two hours up and two back, with a picnic at the top. No other day trip from El Calafate takes you further along a trail. Minimum age is 12, and you should be used to walking uphill for a couple of hours.

Laguna Torre and Laguna de los Tres: nomadicsamuel.com. Laguna Capri: tour listing, October 2026.

Laguna Torre and Laguna de los Tres each take a full day on foot from the village. Add the drive from El Calafate and there is no schedule that works, which is why none of the day trips offers them. If one of them is the reason you came to Patagonia, stay at least one night in El Chaltén.

The park ticket in the north works differently

El Chaltén lies in the northern zone of Los Glaciares National Park, the same park as the Perito Moreno Glacier and with the same rate table. The payment rules are stricter here: the official rate page lists Los Cóndores among the northern access points where tickets are sold only online, through the website or a QR code, and paid only by card. Cash is not accepted. None of the three tours includes the ticket, so buy it at ventaweb.apn.gob.ar before you set off. Rates and discounts are on our entrance fee page.

Clouds, wind and snow decide what you see

Fitz Roy is often hidden. A traveller in October 2026 had no sun, did not see the mountain at all and called the trip a wasted day; another, in August 2026, felt the tour should have been cancelled because of the weather. In winter, snow can stop the Capri hike, as a review from August 2026 reports. You book a fixed date, so the weather is a gamble. All three tours can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start; if your plans allow it, book El Chaltén early in your stay and move it when the forecast for the north looks better on another day.

Pickup only from places with a reception desk

The Patagonia Dreams tour collects you only from accommodation with a reception desk. From an apartment or a private room you walk to a meeting point. The other two tours list hotel pickup without that condition.

Four travellers, four kinds of day in El Chaltén

The two critical voices both blame the schedule more than the guides: two short stops for a long bus ride, and nothing left when the cloud sits on Fitz Roy. Read them before you book the short-walk version.

“This trip was my favourite day in Patagonia!Till you're not actually in El Chalten, you don't really realise how CLOSE the Fitz Roy massif is to the town. Even without any of the longer full-day hikes, you get amazing views, provided the weather complies. …”
Sruti · Spain · May 2026 Laguna Capri hike · Info de Ushuaia
“We had the disadvantage of no sun, so we could not see the highlight, Fitz Roy. So we spent 5 hours on the bus basically to see the village of El Chalten and the small waterfall. It felt like a wasted day. The lunch meal was not necessary. …”
Verified traveler · Austria · October 2026 El Chaltén full day · Patagonia Dreams
“The guides Lucia and Martin were excellent and so was the driver. The walk to the viewing point was well paced and the view was very good. We had good weather so the hike was pretty easy however rain would make it a little more challenging. …”
Douglas · United Kingdom · October 2026 El Chaltén full day · Patagonia Dreams
“Lunch was included. The tour guide did a good job and already tried her best to include the Patagonia . And helpful to take photos with us However, it only stopped at two sites (the waterfall and a short 1-hour hike to the condor lookout). …”

Questions about this tour

Is Laguna de los Tres possible as a day trip from El Calafate?

No. The trail to Laguna de los Tres takes most of a day from El Chaltén on its own, and the drive from El Calafate adds several hours each way. You need at least one night in El Chaltén for it, and the same applies to Laguna Torre.

Which El Chaltén day trip has the most hiking?

The Laguna Capri hike with Info de Ushuaia, about 8 km with roughly 400 m of ascent and a picnic. The other two tours combine the short walks to the condor lookout and the Chorrillo del Salto waterfall.

How long is the El Chaltén day trip?

Between about 11 and 13 hours, depending on the tour. Around five hours of that are spent in and around El Chaltén, the rest on the road.

Do I need a park ticket for El Chaltén?

Yes, for the trails inside Los Glaciares National Park, and none of the tours includes it. In the northern zone tickets are sold only online or by QR code and paid by card, without cash.

Is lunch included on the El Chaltén tours?

On the Tolkeyen tour lunch is included, the Laguna Capri hike comes with a picnic, and on the Patagonia Dreams day lunch is optional.

Is the El Chaltén day trip worth it in bad weather?

Less so. Fitz Roy is the main view, and in low cloud you may not see it at all. Snow can also stop the Capri hike in winter. If you can, keep the day flexible and go when the forecast is clear.
