Which of the two to book
Patagonia Dreams runs the visit as an evening of about five hours. You are picked up at 4:30 pm or 7:15 pm, depending on the departure you book, and the programme starts with mate and a wine tasting. Dinner with a folklore show is part of some options. Drinks with dinner are charged separately.
The Patagonia Profunda tour is the more flexible one: two to five hours depending on the option, with the transfer and the estancia’s own entrance in the price. The dinner show is an add-on you book on top. One guest describes the order of the evening as two hours on the farm with a guide, followed by the meal and the entertainment.
If you arrive back from the glacier in the late afternoon, the later Patagonia Dreams pickup or a short Patagonia Profunda option leaves you time to change. Check the return time of your day tour before you book the evening.
A wool ranch that became part of town
In the early 20th century Estancia 25 de Mayo was one of the wool operations the town depended on, and its buildings of timber and corrugated iron date from that period. El Calafate has since grown out to its fences. A visit described by the Argentine newspaper El Litoral in 2012 followed the farm year in small: sheepdogs moving the flock into the corral, a shearer working with hand shears the old way, the vegetable garden, a short film on local history, and lamb cooked over the fire.
One detail from that report is worth asking for: the café carretero. The wool carters on their long trips made coffee by caramelising sugar with embers in a clay bowl and then dropping the embers into the kettle with the ground coffee, which filters it and gives it a smoky taste.

Beyond 25 de Mayo
If you want a whole day on a ranch with a long ride, Nibepo Aike on Lago Argentino is the other estancia you can visit from town. Both are compared on our estancia tours page.
